The term pornography can be applied to more than just girlie pictures. It is allowing a look at what is kept hidden. Of course, our bodies are generally kept hidden by clothing, as we are but naked apes. But we hide more than just our bodies. We present a mask for each other and conversational phrases that have been scripted for us as we have learned to speak. We hide thoughts from others and ourselves in order to circumvent possible embarrassment or fear. We decide that we must keep certain things private in graduating levels from those that we know well on up to the public at large. As we get to know people we allow them to see further and further into the restricted areas, but when we allow a large jump in this hierarchy, then it starts to take on the form of pornography, as when unmet strangers are allowed to see the naked body. This idea can also be applied to processes of thought. |
