Eventual Horizon (Virtual reality art installation)

The faces in this installation are of people who do not exist. Each face has been created by artificial intelligence, using a dataset of existing photos to produce new images.

Beyond images, artificial intelligence is also being used in gene customization, such as CRISPR technology used to edit human genomes. It is perhaps inevitable that eventually artificial intelligence will be used to modify, and may eventually even construct, genetic sequences of future humans.

Presently, computers have been something that we have held at arm’s length; utilitarian tools that work outside the body. As we reduce our genetic makeup to yet another big dataset, we open the possibility of allowing computers to work on the inside of us, taking part or even directing the construction of our initial identities. We become the products of the imagination of a computer’s artificial intelligence; a virtual reality for computers.
