Text is a technology. All technology is inevitably destined to become obsolete, superseded by an update. As electronic reading devices become mainstream, books will be displaced to the shelves of the antiquated, alongside vinyl records and cassette tapes. As the medium for text is shifting from static pages to the moving image screen, text absorbs the attributes of the medium, becoming motion-text and image-text. The medium is also intertwined with various screen technologies and computing devices, so text images become the product of apparatus and Boolean logic. Letter symbols, no longer a transparent substrate of verbal communication, become iconic image elements representing the marriage of human and machine thinking.
